What the export contains
The Trade Republic transaction export (how to download it) lists not only securities but also your cash account: card payments, refunds, transfers, direct debits, interest and Saveback. Every card payment comes with a date, an amount, the merchant name and a four-digit MCC code (Merchant Category Code), set by the merchant with its bank: 5411 for supermarkets, 5812 for restaurants, 4111 for public transport.
The categories
NokxiStats maps every code to one of these categories:
- Everyday: groceries; restaurants and bars; transport; health and beauty.
- Home: housing and energy; home and DIY; subscriptions and digital.
- Leisure: travel and accommodation; leisure and going out; shopping.
- Other: services and admin; donations and charities; cash withdrawals and money transfers; fees and taxes; other spending.
- Outside the card: transfers sent and direct debits, as categories of their own.
The code describes the merchant, not what you bought: a hotel that charges for dinner stays a hotel, and electronics bought at the supermarket count as groceries. Over a year, this usually evens out.
What the analysis shows
- Spending month by month, stacked by category. Click a month to see whether it is above or below your average, and its transactions.
- By category: share and amount of each category. A click filters the payees and the transaction list.
- Top payees: where you spend the most, with the number of payments.
- Income: transfers received, interest, dividends, Saveback, bonuses.
- Transactions: search by merchant, category or amount, and export to CSV for Excel, LibreOffice or Numbers, with the current filter.
Refunds are deducted from their category, and payments in foreign currencies are shown separately. Security purchases are not spending: they belong on the Portfolio performance page and in the Investments tab.
An example: transfers to yourself
A made-up example. Every month you transfer €1,000 from your current account at another bank to Trade Republic, and spend €950 by card. Without further information, that looks like €1,000 of income and a €50 surplus, although you only moved money between your own accounts.
Tick My accounts on that transfer: it then counts neither as income nor in the balance, and the analysis shows only what you really spend and earn. The choice applies to every transfer from the same sender and is kept if you tick “Remember on this device”.
How to analyse your spending
- Download your transactions as a CSV file: how to export from the app or the browser.
- Drop the file above, or try the sample data first. Several exports, even overlapping ones, are merged; duplicates are removed.
- The Spending and income tab opens. Choose the period at the top: last 12 months, a year or the whole period.
- Mark your own accounts under income, then export the transactions to CSV if you need to.
What your card payments earned you in Saveback: see Saveback tracker.
Limits
- The category comes from the merchant's MCC code; it cannot be changed in NokxiStats for now.
- Payments made through services such as PayPal often carry the service's code, not the actual merchant's.
- Only your Trade Republic account is covered: spending with other cards or accounts is missing.
Frequently asked questions
Can I analyse my Trade Republic spending in Excel?
Yes. The “Export as CSV” button below the transaction list creates a file with date, merchant, category and amount, in the format of English-language spreadsheets. The file is created in your browser.
Why is a merchant in the wrong category?
Because its MCC code describes something other than your purchase, for example a petrol station with a shop, or a supermarket with a pharmacy. The code is set by the merchant and its bank.
Do security purchases and savings plans count as spending?
No. They remain your assets and appear in the Performance and Investments tabs, not in the budget.
Do you need my login details?
No. You download the export yourself, and the analysis runs in your browser, with no account and no upload.
